WIP - Red Cedar Hall Table
Hey,
This is my very first attempt at making furniture.
Note- I used my trusty iphone for the pics, so they are not the best quality. I'll try to get better quality photos from now on.
Pic 1 - Red Cedar before I machined it up
Pic 2 - Stickered after machining
Pic 3- Legs being laminated and glued up (only had 30mm board)
Pic 4- Legs before being tapered on the jointer
Pic 5- Stop block and ensuring it's square
Pic 6- Front panel being glued up
Pic 7- Legs being glued to side panels
Pic 8- Cleaning up the front panel with my LAJ (i'm really enjoying using hand tools - I can so see myself being a hand tool addict very very soon!)
Pic 9- Components dressed up, and some about to be cut to width (I almost forgot to add this, hence being at the end)
I am using dominos for joinery, and plan to use Organoils hard burning oil for the table top and organoils danish oil for the rest.
I am hoping to clean up the rear panel and join the frame with dominos (dry fit) by the end of the week. From here I plan to mark out for the drawer, instal the drawer runners and glue her up!

'Lookin' good!
Top work Andy, soon Wongo will have a competitor.......
(Your walnut will be here tomorrow, so hurry up with this project, we want to see more WIP photos)
It's great for me to see what rough sawn or slabbed boards turn into.
Wongo's chairs were once 4 rosewood slabs, and this red cedar table that was once only a few rough sawn red cedar boards will also become an heirloom piece of work.
Regards
Greg

Looking forward to seeing your progress with this. Looks like you're off to a great start, and you've got some lovely timber to work with there.
Take lots of pictures, and don't get too frustrated if/when the stuff-up fairies visit.

I spent a short while in the workshop tonight.
I put dominos in the front aprons and did a try fit. Not much progress tonight, but hopefully over the weekend i'll get a fair bit done. (Post Sunday night)
Please note the timber needs a good clean up, I was playing around with some finishes and a bit got on the cedar.
The last two pics are of some wild grain qld maple (purchased off Greg) and some red cedar that I got from the Canberra show. I am thinking of doing something different with the top and would greatly appreciate your feedback.
Please excuse the dodgy pics. The markings I used on paint are very rought, and obviouslly if i were to go with either one they would be even and measure up square.
Pic 1- dominos installed
Pic 2- dry assembly
Pic 3 - wild grain qld maple
Pic 4- red cedar
Pic 4- have the wild grain maple or red cedar where its yellow (floating panel) ??
Pic 5- a simple square inlay with white white beech, or some other light timber ??
Pic 6- 3 inlay stripes, again in either white beech or some other light timber ??
Comments on your preferred top would be greatly received

Thanks for the feedback. I initially planned to have the rectangle inlay, but I've been second guessing my decision.
Today I glued the bottom rails, drawer support rail and lastly glued up everything. I'll post photos later today.

Hi Gro,
This is all fabulous stuff, did you say first attempt at furniture? I can't wait to see what you're doing with a bit more experience
Very enjoyable WIP, keep up the good work. The time we enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

Thanks for the feedback Gents
As promied here are some pics of today.
Pic 1 - Cutting the drawer rails to size
Pic 2 - Dominos plunged (I got domi happy and plunged an extra one)
Pic 3- Dry fit
Pic 4 - Glueing up the drawers rails
Pic 5- Easing the edges on the legs - next time I won't bother setting up the router, a hand plane and sandpaper will do the job
Pic 6- Easing the edges
Pic 7- Glueing up the frame
Pic 8- Joinery for the drawer (kauri pine) - i'll have the fingers showing when the drawer is open, something different than dovetails.
Pic 9- Drawer sitting in the rails
Pic 10 - A closer look at the drawer
The frame is in need of a good sanding, it's looking very grubby with the pencil and glue marks.
