Hi clubman7
the last couple of strokes you do see a little cast come off. this is from the fact that this part is in pretty bad shape like i said it had been lying out side for 2 years. when you get a dent or mark in cast it craters sightly and around the outside of the dint you get a slightly raised area this is where you see a small amount of cast coming from you do need to remove these anyhow if you press too hard you will start to scrape the cast its a feel thing but very easy to get use to. rust is a lot softer than steel. i have used this method a lot and on machines that hold tolerances much higher than a mill with great success
the problem with the stone method and i have used it in the past is when you have areas of rust and areas next to it that are not rusted you still wear the good part to get the rusted part. stones are very non discriminating i also had trouble with the stone rounding off the edges slightly and getting into corners
scraping is a very precise way to remove material you can take off microns or a thou if you want that is why its used for reconditioning machine tools if machtool phil runs another scraping class and you have the opportunity to attend i can highly recommend it
cheers
