some pen blanks in the works for ExoticBlanks.com ..
Lots of possibilities for dyes, stains, paints, rubbing waxes, casting
and who knows what else?
Tried one with Rub-N-Buff (oil, metallic powder and carnuba product) and
some with a wiping stain. Might even look good plain. Takes a LOT of CA to
fill these, since they're 3D. Can't really put the CA on with the lathe running
as the blank will tear the paper towel apart. (the cuts are pretty deep)
Lots of fun trying things out.. but it's mostly finishing. The blanks are already
drilled, turned, sanded and tubed.
I knew there was a good reason to get that laser..

Yes, all good stuph but I think We are now gettingto the stage where we could just become pen assemlers.
Nothing wrong with selling a few here and there but to me it takes from the true spirit of penturning/penmaking.

Tend to agree with Artme - sometimes people see a pen and you just can't say 'I made it', cos the tricky stuff has been done by someone else.
Having said that, the fleur-de-lis blank is nice, and would suit the old scout master... What is it made of? Looks metal.
Cheers,
Dave

Pretty impressive stuff indeed, probably more suited to the high end of the market hehe .which I would assume these are aimed at . So many penturners and so many materials its getting hard to be original ,those at least will stand out from the crowd ,thanks for showing ,cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

i like them very much, but i am also inclined to agree with the others about constructing and not turning
i am very impressed with them
now if i had my own laser ....... then i would not be a constructor
damn that christmas list is getting long again
great job

Hi NW88: I like the leaf and the basketweave. Of course I'm the one who does the swirlies that all the gents find a tad out of the box. And yes, that gosh darn box gets bigger and bigger, so it's hard to come up with new eye candy. Thanks for sharing

I can see what people mean about constructing / assembling. I can also see that most
of the kit pens could function right out of the package with no wood at all. We just make
something round and shiny to stick on the kit
Having rounded out dozens of blanks at once, I can see how some people can crank
out a pen in 5 minutes.. I was turning and sanding 5 blanks in 6 minutes with a nice
surface, ready to finish. (and that was with only a sharp roughing gouge and 220 grit)
Now .. if I could only do that with a skew..
I think most of the 'talent' in this would be the finishing, anyway. There's so many
options for coloring. For instance, the one that looks like metal is still maple (they all
are maple) with black acrylic paint and Rub-N-Buff dry brushed onto the highlights..But
the real challenge is applying a CA finish, or even casting in clear resin. The cuts in the
patterns are pretty deep so applying CA with the lathe on is pretty much out.
But it's fun ..

Nice work, they look great. I do agree with the other comments though.
Reality is no background music.
Cheers John
