    Default Spalted Maple Box

Made this while waiting for some details on my next commisioned one. Very simple design. I made it moslty so I could practice French polishing while sitting at the table with my kids while they were doing homework and piano practice.
    Description:
This box is made from a lightly spalted Maple with a Maple crotch top panel. The dimensions 8"x 5"x 3" tall. It is finished inside and out with a coat of drying oil, French polished with shelac, and then buffed with a coat of Canuba wax. Hinges are made by Brusso and are self stopping at 95*. The liner is a synthetic suede and will not tarnish silver.

Now that is great! Love the little spalted zag on the front. Love to hear that you made it just for something to do while being with your family

    cheers

Another great little box. Let us know how the lid was made especially the top and how it's inserted into the sides.

Do you glue all the way around the edge or just in a few spots?

    Thanks,

    Bill

Nice box. That is a great looking lid. Top hinges to go with a deserving box

The lid eh? Well, the box is just a 4 corner grain match, mitered corners, with no splines. The lid was cut off using my tablesaw. What I do with the top panel is to cut a 1/8" groove 1/8" down from the top edge all the way around. I cut the top panel just a bit smaller than the length of the grooves. A bit smaller lets the top panel move with the conditions. It leaves a bit of a reveal all the way around. ( mine always seem to come out bigger than I wanted though). I use the tablesaw to cut the angles on the top panel. I set the blade to about 8* and the fence 1/8" away from the blade. I then put the top piece on edge and run it through the saw. I then set the blade back to 90* and 1/8" high and finish trimming the tounge to the right thickness. When I install the top panel, I put a drop of glue in the center of the end grooves and center the panel. This allows the panel to move while still staying centered. Hope this makes sense and answers your inquiry.
