I can't see how you can avoid fixing the router to the plate. The way I see it you would fix it to the plate, set it in plunge mode without the spring and use the jack to lift for height.

Finished - Old-fashoined Pencil Boxes
They're done. See the WIP for more detail.
The boxes are Indonesian white cedar and spalted Sassafras and box two is red beech and spalted sassafras. Finished with Danish Oil and Traditional Wax. -
